This page holds images and information on the ancestors and descendents of my grandmother on my father's side EDITH MAY BURLEY who was adopted by the family of SAMUEL WARREN between her birth in 20 April 1893 (two other birth years are given in Census as 1892 and 1891). In 1901 she is recorded as an adopted daughter in the census of that year. She married Reginald Eric Knowles our grandfather on 31 Oct 1914 in St. Marys Parish Church, Walthamstow, Essex. He was a Butcher's Manager and travelled a lot in his job and because he carried a lot of cash had a pistol to protect himself. More about him and his passion for rally driving on the KNOWLES page.

Census info:

1881: Samuel Warren and family were living in Crystal Palace Road, Camberwell, London. Note this is the only mention of the son Samuel - he clearly leaves home at some point after this.

1891: The family were living at 38, Barclay Road, Walthamstow, E.17. Interesting mention of a niece born in the US - she was the daughter of Rowland T Warren a 'Cleric in Holy Orders' whose wife, Emma M. came from Philadelphia. The Census on 1901 places the family in Colchester at 2, Gower Road in what appears to be a shared dwelling or a flat.

1901: Still at Barclay Road... and where the first record of Edith May Warren (Burley) appears as an adopted daughter.

1911: The family has moved to 54, Devonshire Road, E.17. Edith is shown as May, the name that was used by the Warren family and thereafter by most of her friends and family. She has become a Domestic Servant after having left school at the age of 14. We think the letter shown below means that she was working in London NW5 - Tufnell and Kentish Town.
